At What Point Should I Hire a Divorce Attorney?

January 10 2017

Unfortunately, divorce is just as much a reality of society as marriage is. While divorce is never easy, some divorces can be more difficult than others. Many times, it might be necessary to hire a divorce lawyer if the couple is having trouble dividing up the assets. There are a few situations where people need to consider hiring a divorce attorney to make sure that the assets are divided evenly. Take a look at some of the situations below.

When to Hire a Divorce Attorney?

Custody Disputes: While no divorce is pretty, divorce is particularly ugly when there are children involved. If there is a custody dispute, it is usually prudent to hire a divorce attorney. First, the kids cannot be separated because children need their brothers and sisters if they have any. Neither parent wants to lose custody of their children and therefore every parent should hire a divorce attorney to provide the best opportunity to retain custody.

Multiple Properties: Some families own more than once house. If there is more than one house involved, this can significantly complicate the situation as the couple tries to decide which house is more valuable and how each house will factor into the division of assets. It might be helpful to hire a divorce attorney to make sure that the properties are divided as evenly as possible.

Trust Funds: Couples who are exceptionally affluent often set up trust funds for their children. There is a wide variety of trust funds on the market and these often have complicated legal angles regarding who can deposit money into the fund, who can withdraw the money, when it can be withdrawn, and what the funds can be used for. If there is a trust involved, it might be wise to hire a divorce attorney.

Divorce can be a complicated process and couples should considering a divorce attorney to assist them through it. If you're looking for a divorce lawyer for men, contact the Okemos family law firm, Baily Smith Bailey,  for a consultation.
